Kenya to face Algeria in Olympics qualifying decider

Updated on 04/02/12  |    By MICHEZOAFRIKA

Reigning African champions Kenya will on Saturday afternoon take on hosts Algeria in a crucial match that could determine who qualifies for the 2012 London Olympics. Both teams come to the final match in Blida with a 2-0 win –loss ratio after they both triumphed past Egypt and Seychelles the only other two teams in the competition.

Algeria on Saturday hammered Seychelles 3-0 (25-6, 25-6, 25-12), while Kenya had to sweat for over 115 minutes before overcoming Egypt 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-13, 20-25, 16-14) in a mouth watering tie in the second day of the Women’s African Qualification tournament on Friday night.

“We are ready to take them head on despite their home ground advantage. We both have two wins and this afternoon will decide who takes the ticket to London.” Said Mildred Odwako Kenya’s Libero.

The last time the two sides met was during the 2011 FIVB world Cup in Japan and Algeria triumphed over Kenya. Initially they had met in the finals of the World Cup qualifier in Nairobi and Kenya beat Algeria 3-1.

The winner of today's match will qualify to represent Africa at the 2012 Olympics in London.
