Premier franchise rugby tournament in the region- Bamburi Super Series -
dates have been announced with new teams being roped in the franchises.
The tournament will run from April 21st to May 19th at various venues
in Kenya and Uganda.
In a press communication, the organizers
have expressed regret with the unavailability of the Tanzania who has
withdrawn citing lack of numbers. Tanzania therefore has been grouped
together with coastal clubs under Coastal Bulls. The last time the
Twigas participated in the series was 2010 losing their matches against
Kenyan franchises.
The franchise structure remains the same but
new teams have been added to accommodate new Kenya Cup entrants Homeboyz
RFC and Kisumu RFC. Nationwide, Eric Shirley Shield and University
league teams have also been included.
In Buffaloes, Kisumu and
Western Bulls are the main teams but will reinforce from Bungoma,
Eldoret, Kakamega, Kisii, Maseno, Masinde Muliro, Moi University, Siaya
and Webuye. For Coastal Bulls, they will be propped by Mombasa RFC and
Tanzania and will look for support in coastal clubs like JKUAT Voi,
Mombasa Poly, Pwani University, Shepherds and Spartans.
Homeboyz
RFC joins Impala and Nondies in Cheetahs and will also count on some
talent from Comras and Mutli-Media University. KCB and Mwamba are the
stalwarts in Lions but KeMU, Kimathi, Thika and Oryx will be knocking on
their door for some time out in the park. Kenya Harlequins will link up
with Nakuru to form Rhinos and will be supplemented by Egerton and
Kabarak.
Student- power Sharks will rely on Mean Machine and
Strathmore RFC for success and will occasionally look for support from
Blak Blad, CUEA, Daystar JKUAT, KCA, Kenya Poly, Nazarene and USIU. They
will be hoping to go one more than third place they got last year.
In
Uganda, Ruwenzori will rope in nemesis Kobs and Pirates who will also
look for support from Rhinos and Nile clubs. For Victoria, Heathens and
Impis will be the mainstay and will also be joined in by Buffaloes and
Entebbe Mongers.
The games will be officially launched next week in Nairobi.
