Wanjiru shines as Safaricom national Deaf athletic championships kicks off in Eldoret

The 21-year old runner from Nyandarua Hannah Wanjiru won her double on the first day of Safaricom national Deaf Athletic championships held today at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

The two-day event is held to select a strong squad of Kenyan athletes for the Deaflympic Games set for July 18-30 in Turkey.

Wanjiru qualified in both categories to represent Kenya in Turkey.

She won the 1500m in 5:12.7 beating Annah Nasimiyu to second in 5:25.6 while Timina Barasa was third in 5:26.6.

She also won the 5000m race clocking  20:25.5 while Roselyda Okumu came second in 20:36.9  and Juster Kwamesa settled third in 20:57.4 and Jentrix Dindi was fourth 22;00.5.

Wanjiru and Okumu cut the qualifying mark of 20:38.00 for the B standard.

Triple Deaflympic champion Simon Kibai shone in the men’s 5000m category leading the first four athletes who qualified with A standards time of 15:48.00.

Kibai won in 14:33.2 followed by Daniel Kiptum (15:12.5), Michael letting (15:20.9) and Peter Toroitich 15:39.6 in that order

Kibai  (3:56.6) also qualified in the 1500m after finishing second to John Koech in (3:56.1) as Kokobi Omari  (4:00.4) and 3000m deaflympics champion Baxton Menjo followed  (4:12.6) followed respectively to all qualify.

Kibai won the  2013 Deaflympic Games  in his triple categories of  1500m, 5000m and 10,000m.
