USA take on Ecuador as Copa America quarters take off

The 45th edition and the 100th anniversary of the Copa America is fast approaching the last mile as the quarter-finals get underway. Eight teams remain, including tournament favorites Argentina and Mexico, with the likes of Uruguay and Brazil having already been booted out of the tournament.

First up, at the CenturyLink Field stadium in Seattle, Washington, will be the United States in a semis’ berth battle with Ecuador. The hosts won Group A after Colombia surprisingly lost to Costa Rica in the last group match, but perhaps facing Ecuador may not have been the best of bets compared to meeting Peru.

The Stars and Stripes have hard a so-so tournament so far, looking out of ideas in its defeat to Colombia in the group opener, but hammering Costa Rica 4-0 before solidifying top spot with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay. However, the Yanks will be missing DeAndre Yedlin, the right back who was sent off for the second bookable offense in as many minutes.

If the Yanks are to secure passage into the semifinals, and await a potential blockbuster against Argentina, Jurgen Klinsmann will have to be wary about an Ecuador side that is as tough and as difficult to predict of the teams remaining in the tournament.

Yes, Los Amarillos garnered the least amount of points of the quarterfinalists, but are yet to be beaten. Ecuador got a barren draw against the not-so-mighty Brazil, drew 2-2 with Group B winners Peru, and sent Haiti to the cleaners in a 4-0 victory. And they are well endowed on the flanks.

The pace on the wings is great for La Tri. There’s Jefferson Montero, Jaime Ayovi, who also plays as a forward, and Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia. Add to this trio star striker and West Ham player, Enner Valencia, and you will see why Ecuador can be the favorites in this match, despite the U.S. commanding home advantage.

As for the Americans, getting a chance to play in the first semis since 1995 should be a morale-booster.
