U.S. in uphill task against Argentina in Copa semis

The United States have a mountain to climb when the hosts face off with tournament favorites, Argentina. It is an uphill task, certainly, lining up against the world’s best team containing the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, amongst a plethora of other stars.

The NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, will have to witness a case of attack vs. defense. One will be foolhardy to expect the Yanks to go guns blazing on their superior opponents, and if the U.S. can limit the Argentine chances, doubt will creep into the minds of La Albiceleste.

These are doubts that will be a reminder of why Argentina has not won a major trophy since 1993, despite having talented players in its ranks, and an upset at the hands of the underdogs will mark the South Americans as perennial underachievers.

Such a game is what coach Jurgen Klinsmann can use to instill confidence in his squad. Though the former Germany international will be missing the likes of suspended Bobby Wood and Jermaine Jones, he knows that with the likes of youngster Gyasi Zardes and veteran Clint Dempsey, the Stars and Stripes can take a chance against the weak link pairing of central defenders Ramiro Funes Mori and Nicolas Otamendi.

As for Gerardo Martino, with a full option of stars to pick from, his quest of changing his country’s fortunes and win its first trophy in 23 years will be the minimum expected by an expectant country that reels from the humiliation at missing out on trophies won by rival elite. And then there is Lionel. The maestro has hit form just at the right time, and is on course to becoming his country’s all-time goal scorer.
