Extreme Sports on Tuesday land a major boost when their Super Eight Soccer tournament received a 35 Million shillings  sponsorship from betting company SportsPesa.

The league  that has seen nine previous editions will now be run in a professional league format  to be run over a period of nine months   starting February 7th 2016.

The league will comprise of teams picked from eight regions within Nairobi as organizers target to build, nurture and reward talent amongst the youth, in a bid to tackle the youth unemployment challenge that currently contributes to about 70% of the country’s unemployment rate.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Hussein Mohammed, Extreme Sports CEO, said, “Tapping from our experience in running the Super 8 tournaments, we are pleased to venture into new frontiers with the Super 8 Soccer League. We are also delighted to receive boost from a leading sport betting company that shares in our vision of enriching the lives of the youth.”

Articulating the government’s support, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, Deputy Governor, Nairobi County who presided over the event as the guest of honor said, “We encourage these sporting activities that employ youths as both active players and spectators. Seeing that these tournaments give platforms for the youth to explore their skills and also get employment, as the county government, we are delighted to match youth’s capabilities and skills with opportunities such as these.”

Applauding the ascension of Super 8 to league status, Ronald Karauri, CEO, SportPesa said, “As the leading sports betting platform, we are pleased to be the title sponsors of Super 8 League’s premier season. We are happy to offer services that enrich sports enthusiasts as well as promote local football talent and empower the youths on social issues.”

The Super 8 league will comprise of three tiers. Tier one being the SportPesa Super 8 Premier league Nairobi County which is the main league comprising of 16 teams playing home and away matches. This is where the teams from the east and west will battle it out for the cup and the bottom 3 teams will face relegation.

Tier two will be the SportPesa Super 8 Division 1 comprising of 16 teams also playing home and away matches. The top 3 teams will then be promoted to the main league while the bottom four teams are relegated.

Tier three is the SportPesa Super 8 soccer tournament which is the entry point of the league. This tournament is open to unlimited teams and is played on a knock out basis with the top 4 teams being promoted to division 1. 

The League’s regions will be divided into two, East and West.

The Eastlands teams will comprise of Embakasi, Kamukunji, Kasarani and Madaraka

West teams will include Langata, Westlands, Starehe and Dagoreti.
