Stars soar above the Sharks in World Cup qualifier

Harambee Stars made major strides towards earning a berth to the group stages of the 2018 World Cup qualifier after they edged visiting Cape Verde 1-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium on Friday evening.

Gor Mahia`s poster boy and Kenya`s lead striker gave Kenya the major leap when he prodded home a header in the seventh minute after Clifton Miheso had done well to pick him out with a neat delivery from the left flank.

Stars coach Bobby Williamson broke the norm departing from his long preferred 4-2-2 formation for a more dynamic 4-2-3-1 formation and the trick worked as the Blue Sharks never gave Kenya any meaningful trouble.

Olunga operated upfront as the main man with Johanna Omollo operating just behind him in a three-man offensive midfield while Omar Mbongi claimed a berth at left back ahead of Abdulatif Omar.

Olunga could have made it 2-0 midway through the first half but he fluffed his chance with the opposing goalie having narrowed the shooting gap.

Seven minutes after the interval,Omollo razed his effort way off the mark having been neatly picked out by Olunga as the guests struggled to  find their footing in the match.

Stars, who depart for Praia  on Friday night ahead of the return leg on November 17 must now fight tooth and nail to defend their slim win and earn a berth to the group stage.
