Shujaa dethrone Samurai as Safari 7’s ends at Kasarani

The Kenya national rugby sevens side Shujaa on Sunday reclaimed the Safari Sevens title following their 38-21 victory over last year’s champions Samurai at the fials of the 2016 edition of the tournament held at the Safaricom Stadium Kasarani in Nairobi.

Frank Wanyama touched down twice to guide Kenya to the sweet victory supplementing other tries by the sensational Brian Tanga, Leonard Mugaisi, Billy Odhiambo and William Ambaka.

On their way to the finals, Shujaa were 17-05 winners over Western Province while Samurai narrowly defeated England Saxons 7-5.

Speaking after the match, team captain Andrew Amonde praised the good performance by the young upcoming players especially by sensational Brian Tanga, “It is encouraging to see such young players come up and take the stage with confidence.” He noted.

Kenya will now shift their attention to the start of the 2016/2017 World Sevens rugby series that starts in Dubai later in December.

Kenya has been drawn in Pool D alongside Australia, France and Japan.

Outside the playing field, vendors counted heavy losses after the three day event came to a close as the 2016 edition of the tournament attracted very low spectator numbers.
