Serie A buffet as title chase,European slots battles rage on

Unlike the three-way battle, between Fiorentina, Internazionale Milan and AS Roma, for a Champions League spot, SSC Napoli and Juventus are mainly embroiled in a Serie A title fight. It seems the latter two have cushioned themselves well in matters to do with Europe’s premier club competition.

Table toppers, Napoli, visit the Italian capital Rome, needing 3 points over SS Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, to avoid being run over by a marauding Juve. The Partenopei, already on 50 points, have won their last six Italian league fixtures and will attempt to continue that run at Lazio, a team they beat 5-0 back in September. Nevertheless, the 9th-placed White and Sky Blues may still offer a stern test to Napoli.

The Old Lady will be waiting to pounce on the leaders. Juventus’ horrible start is already filed in the cabinet marked ‘Forgotten’. The 31-time champions, seeking a fifth consecutive title, are only two points shy of the leaders and, with lowly Genoa making a stopover at the Juventus Stadium, the Bianconeri will see their fixture as an easy 3-point picking.

It is not the same for the likes of Fiorentina, Inter and Roma. The trio is only separated by one point, with Fiorentina being six points behind Juve. Any stumble will surely be taken full advantage of. Already Roma won last night away to Sassuolo, with unanswered goals by Mohamed Salah and Stephan El Shaarawy taking them to fifth spot on 41 points, level with Inter.

The Nerrazzuri welcome mid table side, Chievo Verona, to the San Siro, on the back of a 3-0 Derby della Madonnina demolition at the hands of AC Milan. Inter will definitely be the favorites in this game as they have been beaten only once in 10 league matches by Verona.

As for Fiorentina, occupying the last Champions League qualifying slot, a visit by relegation threated Carpi, to the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, will be welcome, if only for the Viola to keep Inter at bay.

Other fixtures will see Frosinone hosting 10th-placed Bologna, while AC Milan will be looking at the weekend’s derby victory as a platform during the side’s visit to Palermo. Elsewhere, bottom side Hellas will lock horns with Atalanta, with Empoli and Sampdoria playing host to Udinese and Torino, respectively.
