Over 500 athletes for Maria Soti cross country on Saturday

Over 500 athletes are expected for the inaugural Maria Soti Ekiden cross country set for Saturday in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The event to be held at Maria Soti Educational Centre is aimed at commemorating the mother to the former cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott and ten years of the institution's existence.

Established and upcoming athletes are set to clash in the race in the high altitude region.

The race will have 10km senior men and women 8km and 6km junior men and women, 2km for boys and girls under 13 years and 2km for the old.

Organizers said they have invited top athletes including Olympic 5000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot, world marathon champion Edna Kiplagat, Violah Kibiwott and world cross country champion Geoffrey Kamworor.

"We expect thrills in this event since it is located in the region with most athletes," Chairman Athletics Kenya Elgeyo Marakwet county Pius Lai said.

Elite athletes will participate in the event happening just a week after the national cross country trials where Kenya selected its best squad.

"This race will also act as a training for some athletes in the team to Uganda and we are also expecting them," Lai added.

The schools principal Jane Rotich said the preparations for the race are ongoing.

According to Rotich, the race and presence of world stars will motivate and mould upcoming athletes in the school.

"Our school has performed well in Basketball and we want to focus on athletics. We have identified them in school the climate here is good for training," Rotich added. She said the event will be held annually.
