Mukidza Stars as Simbas devour Cranes

Darwin Mukidza's hat trick propelled the Simbas to a 48-10 away romp over Uganda's Rugby Cranes in the Elgon Cup first leg at Kampala's Legends Rugby Club on Saturday 4 June 2016.

Vincent Mose got Kenya off the blocks, Mukidza converting for a 7-0 lead before Mike Okombe landed for a 12-0 lead.

Kabras lock Charles Uhuru would spearhead the Rugby Cranes' attempts for Elgon Cup freedom, touching down with Kevin Makmot converting for a 12-5 score before Phil Wokorach drilled home a penalty to bring the hosts to within two points of the Simbas.

Mukidza would drill home a penalty to see the Simbas go 15-10 up before converting Musa Amusala's and his own try to see Kenya lead 29-10 at the break.

The second half was a lot more tentative, the Cranes chasing the game, the Simbas content to sit back and absorb the pressure.

Nato Simiyu, on as a second half replacement for the very fluid Isaac Adimo grounded the ball to see the Simbas go 34-10 up. Simiyu lifting his head, noticing no Cranes player guarding the strike zone.

His cultured right boot delivered the most accurate of cross kicks, Mukidza saying to himself "Merry Christmas" in early June as he gathered the ball to score and convert for a 41-10 lead before killing off the Cranes, pouncing on a loose ball, slicing through the Cranes backline like a hot knife through frozen butter to touch down and convert for Kenya's biggest ever Elgon Cup away leg win over the Cranes.

48-10 a just reward to the Simbas.
