Monaco battles rivals with second place up for grabs

AS Monaco are second on the Ligue 1 grid. That’s right. But they are a whooping 21 points behind league leaders and defending champions, Paris St. Germain. With 39 points, just 3 ahead of Nice, and a horde of teams within a six point range, the municipality side has its work cut out.

The 7-time league winners, whose last title was in the 1999-2000 season, will be away to Angers Sporting de l’Quest, a team only five points behind them. It will be bruising. Promoted side Angers have been bold this season, and will be welcoming Monaco to the Stade Jean-Bouin, for a clash that, if the home side wins, will propel them to within two points off Les Rouges et Blancs.

Angers may have lost six games already this season, but they are quite formidable at home, having lost once in 11 ties. For Monaco, where Arsene Wenger managed once, they will have to win so as to hold on firmly to the second automatic Champions League spot.

Lyon will have to beat Bastia at the Stade Armand Cesari, if they are to have a chance of reaching within touching distance of European football. Les Gones, famous for their record breaking seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles that they won between 2002 and 2008, will seek to exploit the Corsican side’s position, with Bastia having gotten rid of their manager, following a 1-0 defeat to Guingamp.

The hosts, who have never beaten Lyon previously, sacked their manager, Ghislain Printat, and replaced him with his assistant, Francois Ciccolini on Friday. A win for Lyon will push the side to sixth place on the grid.

Elsewhere, Nantes will be looking for an easy win when the Canaries welcome bottom side club, Troyes, who have only one win to themselves this season, while Stade de Reims will travel to Brittany to face 12th placed Lorient.
