Mexico, Venezuela in top of the table battle

Can Venezuela repeat the heroics of beating Uruguay? Can they do a Peru, defeating a strong side and going top of Group C? It may just be the list of possibilities going through any Venezuelan as Mexico becomes the next opponent for the least-seeded team at the Copa America.

The NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, is where the action will take place. And it will not be friendly for Venezuela. In fact, due to the proximity with Mexico, the country, and an abundance of Mexicans in the state of Texas, it will simply be a hostile environment for the South American side that is popularly known as The Creoles.

With a possible quarterfinal encounter for the runners-up against a marauding Argentina, this fixture will not be a dead rubber, it cannot simply be. Mexico are on form, they are the favorites tonight. Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez is on course to equal or surpass Jared Borgetti’s national goal tally record of 46. And facing the underdogs may simply provide the perfect platform for such a personal quest.

That said, Jamaica and Uruguay thought Venezuela would be also-runs, but Los Criollos quashed such ideas. Mexico coach, Juan Carlos Osorio, will have taken note and asked his side to avoid complacence. It can be seriously punished. Ask Brazil. In addition, Venezuela are yet to concede a goal, implying that the defense can be solid.

The statistics do favor Mexico. El Tri are on a 21-game unbeaten streak, including an 11-match winning run, and have not been beaten by Venezuela in twelve affairs. A draw for the North Americans will be enough to become group winners, due to a better goal difference over Venezuela.

In the other fixture, the dead rubber of the group will see already eliminated and pointless Uruguay and Jamaica fight for third at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
