Lazio hammer battering rams Hellos in ruthless victory

Lazio are just 8 points behind an European spot. The Rome based side battered relegation facing Hellas Verona 5-2 at the Stadio Olimpico. The result takes the Biancocelesti to seventh in the Serie A, two points ahead of Empoli and Sassuolo, both which have a game in hand, while confining Hellas to the basement.

Lazio had the upper hand in the first half, but had to wait until a minute from halftime to break the deadlock. Danilo Cataldi’s lovely through pass split the defense as it found 31-year old Italian forward, Alessandro Matri who scored past Verona keeper, Pierluigi Gollini.

Five minutes after the break, Cataldi turned provider again, this time for Stefano Mauria, as Lazio found the bottom side’s defense napping.  Hellas would have halved the deficit on the hour mark with an own goal from Lazio defender, Wesley Hoedt, had the ball not deflected onto the crossbar.  It would be 3-0 in the 68th minute, with Brazilian midfielder Felipe Anderson scoring into a wide open net.

Nevertheless, desire gripped Hellos and three minutes later, midfielder Leandro Greco pulled one back with a sumptuous free kick that keeper Federico Marchetti could do nothing about. And on the 79th minute, veteran striker Luca Toni made the Mastini believe they could earn something from the game, after getting at the end of Pawel Wszolek’s cross.

It wasn’t to be. 20-year old Senegalese forward, Diao Keita stretched the Biancocelesti’s lead with a wonderful strike three minutes later, before Antonio Candreva killed off the game at the 90th minute with a penalty.
