The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has terminated the services of Kenya Sevens head coach Innocent Simiyu .
Earlier on Thursday ,Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala withdrew Brand Kenya's sponsorship of the Sevens Team after they covered the “Make it Kenya” message during the Paris Sevens to protest unpaid allowances.
The embarrassing blackout instigated disciplinary proceeding against the Kenya Sevens team members but Coach Simiyu opted to sacrifice himself for the players.According to sources, Simiyu stormed the disciplinary hearing at the board on Wednesday evening and said he was to blame for whatever happened in Paris where the players masked the sponsor’s logo over unpaid dues totaling to Sh2.5mn.
Simiyu is said to have personally asked the board not to victimize the players for the decision.
“The Kenya Rugby Union has mutually parted ways with Kenya Sevens Head Coach Innocent Simiyu effective immediately. He took full responsibility for the display that saw the playing unit blank out sponsor’s branding in Paris Sevens which negatively impacted our country and sponsor’s image,” KRU said in a statement on Thursday.
Simiyu penned a two-year deal with KRU on 17 October 2016, replacing Benjamin Ayimba. He guided the team to their first century of points after they collected 10 points in the 2018 HSBC World Sevens Rugby Series.
