Kenya vs Cape Verde: Starting XI

The national soccer team Harambee Stars takes on Cape Verde in a 2018 World Cup second round qualifier on Friday afternoon at Nyayo Stadium.

On paper, Cape Verde who are currently ranked 32nd in the World start as favorites against Kenya who are in position 125.

The Kenyan team has been in camp for the last one week with a focus on the World Cup qualifier and upcoming Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup to be held in Ethiopia. Cape Verde on the other hand has been camping in Portugal where they played in high profile friendlies.

For Friday’s fixture, the absence of first choice keeper Arnold Origi elevates Gor Mahia’s Boniface as the man to stand between the posts.

Zambia based Calabar who was initially not named in the provisional squad will start in defense that also has Ingwe’s Edwin Wafula,Gor Mahia’s Harun Shakava and Teddy Akumu who plies his trade in Sudan with Al Khartoum.

Captain Victor Wanyama will the main fulcrum in the midfield that will miss the services of the hard working Ayub Timbe of Belgian side Lierse who is out due to injury. As expected Gor Mahia’s Micheal Olunga will be Kenya’s bet upfront alongside Johanna Omollo.

Kenya needs a good start in the two legged tie to ease the pressure during the return leg match to be played next week in the Island nation. The last time the two counties met was in 2003 when Kenya emerged with a 1-0 victory courtesy of Dennis Oliech, a win that secured Kenya a ticket to the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations held in Tunisia.

Referees from Ivory Coast will be in charge of the Kenya vsCape Verde match.  Bendele Dennis (centre referee), Moussa Bayere (first assistant, Valere Gouho( second assistant) and Coulibaly Abour(fourth official) will have the tough job of ensuring that the right calls are made.

They will be joined by Gabonese referee assessor Jean Olivier and match commissioner Ali Khadi Jawal who is from Ghana.

Elsewhere, Coach Williamson has also recalled Kenyan Premier League golden boot winner Jesse Were and his teammate from Tusker FC Danson Kago after the football federation “forgave” the duo following their suspension due to “indiscipline” allegations.
