Kenya Simbas edge Cranes to reclaim Elgon Cup

The Simbas reclaimed the Elgon Cup with a comprehensive 45-24 home win over Uganda’s Rugby Cranes, taking home the diadem on a 93-34 aggregate, having won the first leg in Kampala 48-10 slightly over a month ago.

Tries from Ronnie Mwenesi (playing his first competitive fixture in a year) and David Ambunya, peppered by a Darwin Mukidza conversion saw the Simbas go 12-0 up but the Cranes were not out of it, clawing back through Ivan Magomu’s effort that was converted by man of the match Phil Wokorach.

Wokorach would score and convert a brilliant individual try to put the Cranes 14-12 up before Mukidza;s penalty saw the Simba retake the lead, leading 15-14 but the Cranes were ebullient, asking questions of the Simbas, Davis Kiwalabye’s uncoverted try giving them a 19-15 lead before a Mukidza penalty and a Mike Okombe try saw the Simbas go into the break leading 23-19.

Mukidza would add a penalty after the restart to see the Simbas go 26-19 up before converting captain Brian Nyikuli’s try for a 33-19 lead.

Wokorach would land his double to cut the deficit to 33-24 before the Simbas pounced in emphatic fashion, Simon Muniafu touching down with Mukidza converting for a 40-24 before Max Adaka killed it off with a late try for the full time score.
