Kenya Simbas, KCB fullback Tony Onyango dead

The Kenyan rugby fraternity woke up to the sad news of the demise of Kenya Simbas and KCB fullback Tony Onyango who collapsed and died on Tuesday night at his home in Ngong. Onyango who has been a frequent member of the national 15s team was pronounced dead after collapsing having arrived home from training at KCB.

According to several sources, the lanky fullback had been doing gym work at the Ruaraka based club but had to stop after he complained of an irregular heartbeat. He was advised to go home but on arrival, collapsed and died.

He got his first call up for the Simbas under Michael Tank Otieno during the Elgon Cup against Uganda in April 2012 and became a regular under Jerome Paarwater, playing for the Simbas upto 2018 at the Rugby World Cup Repechage tournament in Marseille, France.

An alumnus of Maseno School, Tony first played for Impala Saracens before joining Strathmore Leos and was part of the Leos squad that reached the 2012/13 Kenya Cup Final

He moved to Homeboyz where he won the 2016 National Sevens Circuit before moving to KCB where he was part of the squad that beat Kabras 23-15 in last season’s Kenya Cup final in Kakamega.

Tributes have been pouring all over social media for the stalwart who leaves behind a wife and one kid.
