Juve to face Inter in Coppa Italia after win over Lazio

It wasn’t the most beautiful of games, but Juventus ensured the job was pretty much done. A 1-0 victory away to rivals, Lazio, means that the Turin side will now face off with Inter Milan in a two-legged semi of the Coppa Italia in what will definitely be a showdown.

The dreary affair at the Stadio Olimpico was settled courtesy of former Lazio defender, Stephan Lichtsteiner. The Swiss international was the quickest to react to a Simone Zaza’s shot that rebounded off the post. With an empty net beckoning him, Lichtsteiner hit a weaker shot than Zaza’s, that saw the capital side’s keeper, Etrit Berisha, scramble to prevent it from crossing the line.

It wasn’t to be. Though the 26-year old Albanian international got his hand on the ball and tried to claw it away, technology wasn’t on his side. The goal line technology, introduced in Italian football this season, made referee Antonio Damato’s work easier, as replays showed the ball had marginally crossed the line.

Lazio had much of the possession, but the Bianconeri had the better chances. Lining up in a 3-5-2 formation, Massimiliano Allegri opted to leave the likes of legend Gianluigi Buffon, last game’s star man, Paulo Bruno Dybala and striker Mario Mandzukic on the bench, allowing Spanish forward Alvaro Morata and Brazilian keeper, Neto, some game time.

The likes of FIFA World Cup goals record holder, Miroslav Klose and Argentine midfielder, Lucas Biglia, couldn’t breach the defensive trio of Giorgio Chiellini, Martin Caceres and Leonardo Bonucci.

The semi-finals of the Italian Cup, which include Lega Pro side, Alessandria, facing giants AC Milan, will take place next week from the 26thof January, with the return matches happening a week later.
