Inter seeks to bounce back as leaders Napoli host Sassuolo

FC Internazionale Milano, or Inter Milan in short, has to win today’s match at Atalanta. It really does, otherwise Roberto Mancini’s men will start seeing Serie A daylight forming between them and their rivals, Napoli and Juventus, especially after last weekend’s defeat at home against Sassuolo, courtesy of Domenico Berardi’s last minute penalty.

12th-placed Atalanta may provide reprieve for the Nerazzurri, and Inter will match into Stadio Atleti Azzuri d’Italia with confidence in full knowledge that the hosts have won only two of their last 9 league matches, losing six times, including the last four consecutive games.

Not that the Milan side have fared well either. La Beneamata have lost 3 of their last six Serie A fixtures to drop to third place on the grid, and with a Coppa Italia fixture away to league leaders Napoli up next on Tuesday, Inter cannot afford any more slip ups in their title quest. Especially against their Lombardy regional rivals Atalanta, a team they have beaten in their last 3 match ups.

It will not be really straight forward for leaders SSC Napoli though, even after the 5-1 mauling they dished out to newcomers Frosinone. Maurizio Sarri’s men welcome Inter Milan’s conquerors, Sassuolo, to the City of Naples’ Stadio San Paolo, as the Partenopei look towards cementing top spot in the Italian top division.

In the reverse fixture at Sassuolo, Napoli lost 2-1, courtesy of goals by Antonio Floro Flores and Nicola Sansone, after the Neapolitan side had taken a 3rd minute lead through Slovakian midfielder, Marek Hamsik.

But with Juventus on a roll, having won their last nine Serie A fixtures, including wins against AC Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and derby rivals Torino, the game at Naples appears as a must win fixture for a team two points clear at the top. Much will be expected of top scorer in the Italian league, Gonzalo Higuain, who currently has 18 goals to his name.

Today’s other fixture will 14th placed Torino play host to relegation side Frosinone, a team whose last win was in November, 2015.
