IAAF President has congratulated Kenya's Hellen Obiri for making history at teh world stage.
International Association of Athletics Federations’ president Sabastian Coe has congratulated Hellen Obiri for breaking the glass ceiling to record history of winning outdoors, indoors, and cross-country world individual titles.
Obiri became the first woman (seniors) to record the feat when she recently won the 10km gold medal at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. This was her maiden appearance at the World Cross event.
She added this gong to her 5,000m outdoors and 3,000m indoors individual titles
Coe said: “I like history, so I want to congratulate Africa on the performance of its athletes and Hellen Obiri’s achievement in Aarhus. She became the first woman on the planet to win senior world titles Indoors, Outdoors and at Cross Country,”
The soldier beat Ethiopian duo of Dera Dida and Gidey Letesenbet to silver and bronze medals respectively in Aarhus.
Obiri was resolute on what she was aiming for when she qualified to represent the Kenya Defence Forces team at the national trials. After the KDF trials at Kahawa Garrison in Nairobi, she noted that cross country was the only title in world stage that she’d not collected.
“This is the only medal I had not won and I am happy to have claimed it in style,” Obiri said
