Hasten preparation for World Under-18 championships-Kipsang

With only less than six months to the IAAF World Under-18 championships set for Nairobi, Kenya, Athletics Kenya and the Government has been told to hasten the preparations.

Nairobi will host the World Under-18 championships from July 12-16 and the President of Professional Athletes Association of Kenya Wilson Kipsang has said the government should fully support the Local Organizing Committee for a successful event.

“This is the year that Kenya is proud of having won the rights to host the event and it is now time to prove our capability. I want to urge the government to make sure that the LOC has all the necessary machinery for the preparation of the event,”Kipsang said.

It will be the second IAAF competition to be hosted in Kenya after the 2007 world cross country championships held in Mombasa.

According to Kipsang, the preparations were at a slow pace and all the requirements should have been ready by now.

“The organizing committee has been promising us that there is progress but we need the pace to be upped so that we fully get ready to host the event,” Kipsang who is the former world marathon record holder said.

Britain and Switzerland have withdrawn their teams from participating in the championships.

British Athletics opted out saying it will concentrate on the Commonwealth Youth while Swiss Athletics cited the current political situation in the country.

However Chief Executive Officer Mwangi Muthee has assured that several countries will field their athletes into the championships including athletic powerhouses like USA and Jamaica.
