Sofapaka handed Gor Mahia just the second loss of the season after beating the reigning champions 3-1 at the Narok Stadium on Saturday. Nigerian forward Promise Chinoso striking twice with Sebastine Ikekhai scoring a worldie late on to give the 2009 champions victory.
The result saw Gor Mahia’s lead at the top of the standings cut down to three points with Kakamega Homeboyz who are second playing to a 1-1 draw away to Bandari FC in Mombasa in the other fixture. Third placed AFC Leopards play Tusker on Sunday.
Meanwhile in the early kick off, Wazito FC finally found their winning groove after beating Western Stima 2-1 to hand themselves some healthy relegation reprieve. Musa Masika scored the winner late in the game. Elsewhere in Bungoma, Ulinzi Stars picked a point on the road with a 1-1 draw against Nzoia Sugar.
In Muhoroni, relegation fighting Chemelil Sugar picked up only their second win this season with a 2-1 victory over Posta Rangers as the sugar belt side, under the co-ownership of Muhoroni Youth owner Moses Adagala, moved to nine points.
All eyes were however in Narok where the holders were looking to open up the gap on top of the standings as they looked to stamp their authority on the way to a record extending 19th league crown.
They however found themselves trailing after barely a minute when Chinoso’s bouncing header from an Elli Asieche cross on the left beat keeper David Mapigano with an awkward bounce.
However, Gor responded when Onyango headed home from a Kenneth Muguna cross to draw the sides level at 1-1. Juma Balinya should have taken Gor comfortably 2-1 up when he intercepted a weak clearance from the Sofapaka keeper, but his shot came off the bar.
After the break, Sofapaka survived a few scares before they eventually went 2-1 up, Chinoso heading strongly past Mapigano from another Asieche delivery off a corner.
Sofapaka then ensured they were 3-1 up with six minutes left when Chinoso struck a sweet volley from range ending up in the top right hand corner.
