Govt and SportPesa boost local pros for Kenya Open

Kenyan golfers got a shot in the arm with sponsorship from the government and betting firm Sportpesa to facilitate their participation in the Barclays Kenya Open.

The government gave each player Sh50,000 as Sporpesa advanced each of the eight golfers  with Sh100,000 to effectively participate in the tournament.

The beneficiaries are veteran professional golfer Jacob Okello, David Wakhu, Anthony Juma, Nelson Simwa, Richard Ainley, Brian Njoroge, David Opati and Ali Orende.

Sports Kenya Director General Gordon Oluoch said they sourced for funding from the private sector after receiving a proposal for funding from the golfers and that’s how Sportpesa came into their rescue.

“We also thought it wise to top up the sum which had been advanced to the golfers by the betting firm,” he said.

Presenting the cheques to the golfers Sportpesa deputy Marketing manager Andrew Sikwe said they decided to sponsor the players in the company’s policy of promoting local talent.

Okello asked the government and the private sector  to promote them by funding  professional golfers to play in tournaments outside the country for exposure so that they can be able to put up sterling performances and even possibly winning the Kenya Open.

The golfers were handed the sponsorship at Golf Park (GP) on Tuesday during the GP Club Night.

The Kenya Open Golf Championship tees off on Thursday to end on Sunday.
