Kenyan champions Gor Mahia started their CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign on a poor footing, losing a two goal lead before being held to a 2-2 draw by their Rwandese counterparts Rayon Sport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday afternoon.
This is the second time in as many months that the two sides are meeting having played to a 1-1 draw in the CAF Confederations Cup in Kigali earlier on. Gor looked set for victory with Jack Tuyisenge and Humphrey Mieno’s tap ins in the first half sending them ahead.
However, a dip in concentration in the second period saw them drop in levels, Ismaila Diarra’s penalty and Pierre Kwizera’s late strike seeing them drop the lead.
Just fresh from their three successive wins in the Kenyan Premier League that sent them comfortably leading the standings, Gor were in good spirits and began the game well. Tuyisenge gave them a 34th minute lead after tapping home an Ephraim Guikan low cross.
Guikan did the same just four minutes later, his break on the wing handing him space to look up and cite Mieno with a low cross, the midfielder doing the most to tap home.
However, in the second half, things went south for Gor. Diarra scored from the pot in the 63rd minute and they upped the pressure, forcing Gor to defend deep.
The pressure bore fruit in the 89th minute when Kwizera finished off an assist from Kevin Muhire. Gor must now win their second group match on Tuesday against Burundi’s Lydia Ludic to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.
