Gor Mahia hit Bandari to win Super Cup
Gor Mahia beat Bandari to win SuperCup
Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia kicked off their domestic season in style, beating Bandari 1-0 to win the season opening KPL Super Cup in Machakos on Sunday. Lawrence Juma scored the lone goal of the match in the second half.
Gor however finished the match with 10 men after new signing Tobias Otieno was sent off in the 77th minute for a second yellow card.
New coach Patrick Polack won his first match and first trophy since taking charge, having started his tenure with a 0-0 draw in the CAF Champions League against Burundi’s Aigle Noir last weekend in Bujumbura.
It was a closely contested affair with Gor’s new team working to gel while Bandari who beat them in the 2016 final worked to break them apart.
New signing Clifton Miheso was handed a start on the left side of attack and he was at the heart of Gor Mahia’s opening two chances. In the ninth minute, he found some shooting space from range but his effort flew straight into the keeper’s arms.
Six minutes later, he swung in a freekick from the left, met by Kenneth Muguna at the edge of the six yard box, but his thumping header flew just wide.
On the other end, Bandari’s first chance came in the 16th minute when William Wadri picked up the ball from distance, citing the Gor keeper a few yards off his line but his shot flew wide.
In the second half, each side increased the tempo and it was Gor who would break the deadlock when Juma picked up the ball inside the box after Bandari struggled to clear a cross and shot to the bottom left.
The dockers were punished immediately after losing a good chance to score on the other end when substitute Benjamin Mosha arrived a few seconds late to a Yema Mwama cross.
Bandari had a chance to draw level with 15 minutes left when Gor keeper David Mapigano spilled a cross, but Mosha rifled the resultant ball wide off target. Gor went defensive for the final five minutes of the game, Kennedy Otieno who had been brought on being subbed off again for defender Joachim Oluoch.
The two sides will now shift attention to their CAF assignments this weekend with Bandari travelling away to face Al Ahly Shandy in Khartoum while Gor face Aigle Noir in Nairobi.
