Gor Mahia edge closer to their 18th Kenyan Premier League title after beating Ulinzi Stars 2-1

Gor Mahia moved closer to their 18th Kenyan Premier League title after beating Ulinzi Stars 2-1 in Nakuru on Monday to move nine points clear on top of the standings. Samuel Onyango scored against his former employers coming off the bench to give K’Ogalo the victory and a healthy lead on the table with one match at hand.

Onyango was at the end of a three-touch move by Gor when he slid the ball past his former captain James Saruni. Ulinzi had lost a clean scoring chance off a corner with Harun Mwale bouncing a header over and Gor keeper Shabaan Odhoji restarted play quick.

He booted the ball long for Dennis Oliech who brushed it over for Onyango to race clear with only Saruni to beat.

Enosh Ochieng’s 14th goal of the campaign had drawn Ulinzi level after Erisa Sekisambu scored after 24 seconds, but the industrious Onyango who had spent just 20 minutes on the pitch ensured Gor remained on course for a league title.

Gor boss Hassan Oktay rested most of his first team stars with a tough run of fixtures awaiting them with three games in six days starting Thursday in Kisumu. They got a perfect start when Ssekisambu headed home from close range after 24 seconds, Francis Mustafa delivering the cross.

Ulinzi were not taking it lying down and they had chances of their own. A brilliant low cross from Brian Birgen destined for Ochieng inside the box was cut out by Joachim Oluoch with Joash Onyango clearing the ball away.

Oscar Wamalwa also had a header from the edge of the six-yard box sail straight to keeper Shabaan Odhoji’s arms off a Harun Mwale freekick.

In the second half Gor started bright and midfielder Hashim Ssempala, signed in mid-season from Tusker FC had some chances. The Ugandan midfielder had three shots, one off a freekick all sailing into keeper James Saruni’s arms.

Ulinzi thugh played well and created chances. They were gifted after 75 minutes when Boniface Onyango headed across the face of goal a freekick from John Njuguna with Enosh stretching in to guide the ball into the net.

Gor though got the winner off a counter with only four minutes left on the clock.
