Good outing for Kenya in 5th Africa Cross Country Championships

Kenya’s Cellphine Chespol and Alfred Barkach bagged gold in the senior men and women’s races respectively at the 5th edition of Africa Cross Country Championships at Chlef, Algeria on Saturday 17th March,2018.

Chespol thought she had won the race after 8km but she was directed to go for another lap. Despite the mix-up she managed to bag the gold for Kenya after timing 35:10. Margaret Chelimo clocked 35:13 to win silver for Kenya.

In the Senior Men’s race (10km), Ugandan Thomas Ayeko almost spoiled the party as he led most of the way only to be  outwitted by Kenyans Alfred Barkach and compatriot Julius Kogo in the last 50 meters sprint for a Kenya 1-2 finish. Kogo and Barkach both timed 30:47.

In the Junior Men’s category, Ronex Kipruto  led another 1-2 for Kenya as he was followed by Stanley Waithaka to ensure Kenya bagged all the golds and silvers on offer for the men’s junior and senior races.

Ethiopia claimed all the medals on offer in the Junior women race and went on to stage a great race to bag the mixed relay title.Kenya finsihed second.
