Michael Githae claimed Kenya’s first medal of the 2022 Commonwealth Games after placing third in the men’s marathon in Birmingham, settling for the bronze medal in a time of 2 hours 13 minutes 16 seconds.

This was some consolation for the Kenyan team who were without the fancied Eric Kiptanui  who missed the race due to an administrative error.

Victor Kiplangat became the first man from Uganda to win the Commonwealth Games marathon after he dominated the race to win the title in a time of 2:10:55.

The 22-year-old went the wrong way late in the race, but his lead was so big, that his victory wasn’t compromised as he was able to follow the directions of a very attentive official and get back on the course.

Alphonce Felix Simbu of Tanzania finished second with a time of 2:12:29.
