Four-midable Roma thrash hapless Fiorentina

In a Friday night affair between third and fourth placed Serie A sides, AS Roma created daylight on Fiorentina with a merciless 4-1 hammering to move to within two points off second placed Napoli. A brace by former Chelsea forward, Mohamed Salah, and two goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Diego Perotti, were enough to strengthen Roma’s hold on a Champions League slot.

Having cooled off the Florence based side’s early bombardment, the capital side got their breakthrough in the 22nd minute, when Salah received a defense splitting pass from Miralem Pjanic before squaring the ball to 23-year old Italian forward El Shaarawy, who tapped it into the net.

Only three minutes later, provider turned goal scorer. Perotti passed the ball to Salah, whose striker from outside the box received a deflection from defender Davide Astori that left Fiorentina keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu stranded and the ball sailing into the net.

Perotti got the third goal for the Romans in the 38th minute, after getting at the end of some good run run on the left wing by El Shaarawy. However, in the fifth minute of first half’s injury time, Slovenian forward Josip Ilicic reduced the deficit with a penalty after substitute forward Cristian Tello had been brought down by Roma defender Lucas Digne in the box.

Salah would then cap Roma’s seventh successive league victory in the 58th minute after the Egyptian beat the offside trap and converted a long range cross with a ball through the legs of Tatarusanu. With Napoli playing host to 10th-placed Chievo Verona in Naples, coach Luciano Spaletti will be hoping for an upset as the Giallorossi aim at going second on the grid.
