Former KPL Champion Kevin Oliech dies of cancer

The 33-year-old a premier league winner with Mathare United (2008) succumbed to cancer in a German hospital on Sunday evening. Preparations were in high gear to transfer the Opiyo to USA for treatment but he did not pull through.

Former Kenya international forward Kevin Opiyo Oliech has died. The 33-year-old a premier league winner with Mathare United (2008) succumbed to cancer in a German hospital on Sunday evening. Preparations were in high gear to transfer Opiyo to USA for treatment but he did not pull through.

Family spokesman, Nixon Onywanda Oliech though distressed to comment more confirmed the sad developments. Opiyo who had one national team cap (Cecafa 2004) has been battling the disease for four years.

He is the younger brother of the famed Dennis Oliech, Andrew Oyombe, Kennedy Oliech and the late Steve Okumu. His demise comes two years after the death of his mother Mary Auma Oliech (July 2018).

In the Kenyan premier league, Opiyo turned out for Mathare United, Tusker FC, Thika United FC, Ushuru FC, Nairobi City Stars and Securicor (defunct).

Internationally, he featured for German fifth tier side KFC Uerdingen 05 and second-tier Alemannia Aachen before calling it a day.
