Fight for European slots turning Bundesliga into a brawl

Forget Bayern Munich. Forget Borussia Dortmund. The next team order is trading positions as fast as windy flames can devour. Picture Bayer Leverkusen, for instance. Just last month they had reached the coveted fourth. After last night, they are now seventh.

Two defeats by Dortmund and FSV Mainz, 1-0 and 3-1, respectively, must have appeared like a wobble. It's last night's 4-1 home defeat to lowly Werder Bremen, their third consecutive, that must have felt like a stinger.

A Claudio Pizzaro hatrick, including a penalty, and a Fins Bartel opener were too much for a comeback. The BayArena side were left to contend with a Papy Mison own goal as their consolation.

It's Hertha Berlin who are trying to  free themselves from the schackles of a mini brawl. Last night's 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt has taken the capital side to three points clear of fourth placed Borussia Monchengladbach.

Gladbach, for their tires after a slump, are on the rise again, ripping apart VfB Stuttgart in a 4-0 mauling, to go joint on points with Mainz, the Bayern and Leverkusen destroyers.

That leaves Schalke 04. After two points from only three matches, they had to come from a goal down to win 3-2 against Hamburger SV to go sixth on 38 points. But they cannot afford any slip ups because Wolfsburg are already lurking.
