Chile, Colombia in pursuit of Copa America final slot

Chile, Colombia in pursuit of Copa America final slot

Defending champions Chile have hit form at the right moment. That was evident in the quarterfinals of the Centennial Copa America tournament, where La Roja bamboozled Mexico 7-0 to remain in pursuit of their title defense.

Though Juan Antonio Pizzi will be missing the services of the suspended mercurial Arturo Vidal for the semifinal at the Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago, Illinois, the gaffer still has the likes of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez to call upon, and in the tournament’s top scorer Eduardo Vargas, he has a match winner.

Not that Colombia will be pushovers. No. They are not Mexico. Los Cafeteros has been one of the best sides in the Copa America and reached a deserved last four. James Rodriguez is on fire, the playmaker being crucial to Colombia’s attack, ensuring good link play with AC Milan striker, Carlos Bacca. And they also have Chelsea winger Juan Cuadrado.

Jose Pekerman knows his side is the less favorite to storm into the finals to be held at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, but there is a reason that Los Cafeteros are ranked third best in the world, ahead of their opponents for the match tonight. They are simply that good and have been getting positive results in the past.

It remains to be seen what impact the loss of the box-to-box Vidal will have on the Chileans or the tinkering tactics deployed by Pekerman, but one thing is certain, this match will not be one-sided nor will it be boring.
