CHESS: Five sail through to Nationals after Kiambu triumph

State House Girls’ Lily Robi, Timothy Mwabu, Nishi Vrajbhushan, Joy Njeri and Vallarie Gesare were in impressive form as they won all their games in their respective categories during the Kiambu Region Youth and Cadet Chess Championships held at Alliance Girls.

The five garnered maximum points of six each and have comfortably secured slots at the national showpiece set for Bishop Gatimu Girls and Ruthagati Boys from between April 5 and 8 in Nyeri County.

Robi, a form four student was too smart for her six opponents in the girls U18 category as Alliance Girls’ Stacie Nyambura and Lilian Kingori finished in the second and third positions with five and four points respectively. Mwabu of Alliance High ruled the boys U16 class with six points to beat schoolmate Allan Wangai and Strathmore School’s Mathenge Gitahi to the second place with five apiece.

Waridi Chess Ventures’ Vrajbhushan was the U14 girls victor and let Patience Wangeshi (4.5) of Maryhill and Rose of Sharon’s Christine Tamaro (4) jostle for silver and bronze respectively. In the U10 girls cluster, Njeri was in a class of her own as competition amongst others in players seemed too tough that her closest rival Ayuma Lugadiri (Jawabu School) finished with 3.5 points and Grace Lindsey (Elimu House Schools) was third with three.

Elimu House Schools’ Gesare led the U8 girls category as Sheila Wanjiru (4) of Westlands Primary School and of Rose of Sharon Kayla Mbevi (3.5) joined her to the podium.
