Chepchirchir breaks world record in UAE

Kenya’s Peris Chepchirchir has broken the world Half marathon record this morning at the  11th edition of the RAK Half marathon in United Arab Emirates.

The reigning IAAF World Half marathon champion clocked 65:06 to smash the previous record of Florence Kiplagat by three seconds. Chepchirchir had to be carried off the finish line  as she collapsed after crossing the tape to achieve the historic milestone.

The 23 year-old athlete who comes from Nandi County finished fourth last year at the course and today she also edged out Olympic marathon champion Jemimah Sumgong to fourth in 66:43.

Three-time RAK champion Mary Keitany smashed her own best, and very nearly the old world record, with a 65:13 clocking, while Joyciline Jepkosgei ensured a Kenyan clean sweep, crossing the newly positioned finish line in 66:08, a personal best by almost three minutes.

In the men’s category, Bedan Karoki carried the day in 59:10 for a new personal best time.Ethiopia's  Yigrem Demelash timed 59:19 while Kenya’s Augustine Choge finished third in 59:26 in his third ever half marathon outing while another Kenyan Solomon Yego settled fourth in 59:50.
