Bremen stun Leverkusen as Dortmund joins German Cup semis parade

SV Werder Bremen. That’s right. They caused an upset. The relegation threatened club pulled a fast one. Into the semis of the German Cup. Away, at the BayArena. It seemed impossible, but it was likely. A 3-1 victory over a 10-man Bayer 04 Leverkusen guaranteed passage into the semis last night. It’s true, miracles do happen. Ask the River Islanders.

Picture this. Man United outcast, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez had given Bayer the lead in the 23rd minute, at home, from the penalty spot, after Spanish defensive midfielder, Alejandro Garcia, had fouled forward Stefan Kiessling in the box. It would have been cruise mode from then on. It was short lived.

Nine minutes later, Santiago Garcia equalized for Bremen from a Fin Bartels assist after a free kick. But four minutes before halftime, Bayer defender, Wendell, fouled Bartels inside the box to give a penalty to Werder. It was his last action, as the Brazilian fullback was given his matching orders.

Veteran forward and former Bayern Munich hitman, Claudio Pizzaro, scored from the spot to give Werder a halftime lead. It wasn’t the end. 8 minutes before fulltime, Bremen, who had conjured better chances, secured the victory via 20-year old Austrian forward, Florian Grillitsch, from close range.

Werder were joined by Borussia Dortmund, who hammered the living daylights out of VfB Stuttgart in a similar 3-1 scoreline. Stuttgart stood no chance after Marco Reus stung from close range in the fifth minute.

However, Die Roten defender Lukas Rupp restored parity in the 21st minute before Die Borussen Gabonese hitman, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the Black and Yellows a halftime lead, nine minutes later. A minute from time, Armenian international midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, doubled the visitors lead to give Dortmund a passage into the semis of the DFB Pokal at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. It was totally deserved.
