Borussia seek win as relegation battle heats up

Borussia Monchengladbach will have to bounce from a 3-1 home loss to Borussia Dortmund, if the Gladbach will keep off the chasing pack in the fight for fourth place. With only three points separating the Foals from Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke 04 and Wolfsburg, Andre Schubert will be keen to see his side earn three vital points this weekend.

Match Day 19, on Friday night, takes the Borussia south to Mainz to face a tricky opponent in 1.FC Mainz 05. The 8th placed side, which is also fighting for a place in European football, is only three points from a Europa League qualification spot, and five off the visiting Monchengladbach.

Borussia will be eager to exploit Mainz’s three-match winless streak that includes two losses, the last being a 1-0 at the hands of FC Inglostadt last weekend. However, the Coface Arena will be unforgiving, given that Monchengladbach lost 2-1 at home to Mainz early in the season and that the visitors have won only once in five Bundesliga matches against the O-Fives, dating back to May 2014. It’s a banana peel.

Elsewhere, on Saturday 29th January, FC Augsburg will welcome Eintracht Frankfurt to the SGL Arena for a mid-table clash. Frankfurt beat Wolfsburg 3-2 at home last weekend, and will be buoyed by that victory, while Augsburg held capital side and third placed, Hertha Berlin, to a 0-0 away draw.

The two teams both have 20 points and are only separated by Augsburg’s better goal difference. A win for either team will propel it to tenth-place, if the other results go their way. But both teams will remember that they are only two points clear off the relegation playoff spot.

VfB Stuttgart will be following that tie keenly, even as they entertain 11th placed Hamburger SV at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Stuttgart have 18 points and a goal difference of minus 13, equal with relegation playoff side, Werder Bremen, but have scored five more goals than Bremen. That is how a pendulum swings.

The Reds have won their last two league affairs, and are unbeaten in four, so are in good form, and will be keen to punish a Hamburger side that has gained only one point from the last four matches, including three losses.
