Boost for Gor Mahia as Joash returns ahead of Derby

Gor Mahia head coach Steve Polack says he is delighted with the return of defensive kingpin Joash Onyango ahead of Sunday’s Mashemeji Derby. The Kenyan international has missed the last two matches on suspension after receiving a red card in a league tie against Western Stima.

In his absence, Gor have conceded two goals in identical 3-2 wins and Polack says the defender’s return will give stability to the backline.

“Joash is a big player and a huge leader in the team and if you miss players like that it is always hard on your team. He is a rock for the team and he brings in a lot more stability in the defending and hopefully he makes us solid again,” Polack stated.

The tactician has admitted the rate at which they have been conceding goals is worrying for him but reiterates he has worked on them during training this week especially to rid out individual errors that have been down to concentration.

The only absentees for Polack’s men in the derby will be defenders Philemon Otieno and Wellington Ochieng who have been on the treatment table for a while. Philemon though has resumed training but is yet to tick the right notes in fitness.

Wellington though is expected to be out for the rest of the season after a niggling knee injury.

Ahead of the derby, the tactician says he expects a tough duel from AFC, noting that they have been in good form of late and will pose a strong challenge.

“Well I haven’t watched many of their matches, just some highlights. But I know they are in good form and are doing okay. But for us, we are concentrating on ourselves and looking to make the good things better and correct the wrongs,”he says.

Adding; “Anyone who plays against us always puts in their best and we expect the same from AFC. We know they want to come and revenge for the last loss but we are ready and will tackle the game well.
