Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma has dropped some big names as he named his provisional squad for the 2020 Olympic qualifiers. Ouma named a squad of 39, hugely comprised of young players and they are set to get into camp on Sunday, training at Camp Toyoyo.

Leading the list of those dropped include immediate former captain Wendy Achieng as well as star forward Esse Akida. Akida has just returned home from a successful stint in her first professional contract out of Kenya, playing in Europe.

There is also no place for midfielders Cherish Avilia and Christine Nafula, nor striker Neddy Atieno as well as Mary Kinuthia, all who were an integral part of the team that led Kenya to its first ever African Women Cup of Nations in 2016.

Kenya will face Mali in the first leg of the qualifier slated for August 28, with the second leg set to be played on September 1 in Nairobi.

The qualifying tournament, which is in its fifth edition, will determine which team gains qualification to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan. Only the winner will qualify while the losing finalist will have a play-off chance against a team from the South American Confederation.

Starlets were handed a bye into the second round of qualification based on their ranking while Malawi qualified after thrashing Mozambique 14-1.

A win in this round will see Kenya book a slot against the winner between Gabon and Ghana.
