Bayern Munich have to be very careful. They may appear as the Bundesliga champions-elect, occupying the perch, but were given a timely reminder that they are yet to reign supreme. Before last night, the Bavarians were in cruise mode, like the train called Unstoppable.

And then FC Mainz appeared. Two shots on target. The visitors had derailed Pep Guardiola's charges. Two goals cut Munich's lead at the top to five points. 2-1 it ended. And with Bayern travelling to Borussia Dortmund this weekend, the points deficit could drop to two only. Incredible, not impossible.

It is not a scene Munich fans have been treated to this season. A perfect home record was sent to the cleaners. Spanish midfielder Jairo Samperio, was at the end of a superb counterattack, in the 26th minute, to give a shock lead and stun the home fans.

Bayern had to wait till four minutes after the hour mark for the equalizer. French winger Arjen Robben hit a 30-yarder before riffling the net. But with four minutes left to play, 22-year old Colombian forward, Jhon Cordoba, did the unthinkable for Mainz. Bayern were left in a point of no return.

That victory pushes Mainz to 5th place on 39 points, one above Schalke 04, missing out on a champions league play off slot on goal difference. As for Dortmund, a 2-0 victory at Darmstadt takes them to 57 points. This weekend, it could be 60 points. And then the war cries begin.
