Argentina blitz past a poor U.S. to head into Copa finals

They couldn’t do it, the United States. And they paid the price, being outclassed and smashed into smithereens by their superior opponents. Four goals for Argentina, another brace for Gonzalo Higuain and a walk into their second consecutive Copa America final. It was that easy, like literally, for the hosts offered absolutely nothing. No shots in the entire match.

If the Yanks had any hopes of making the affair at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, a spectacle, they were squashed from the beginning, in the third minute, to be precise. From a corner kick, Ezequiel Lavezzi received a return pass from Lionel Messi and produced a beautiful header that left goal keeper Brad Guzan stranded, to give La Albiceleste the lead.

The South Americans were intent on running riot past a Jurgen Klinsmann side that appeared overawed by the occasion. They possessed the ball, created the chances and doubled their lead courtesy of an outrageous free kick in the 32nd minute by that man again, Leo.

It was really a one-sided game, and Argentina extended their lead four minutes into the second half, when Gonzalo Higuain grabbed his first of two after taking control of a cross to send the ball into the net. The Napoli striker’s second came after the Americans erred at the back. Messi intercepted and laid the ball onto Higuain’s path for the forward to make it 4-0 and journey into the finals.

As for the U.S., they will wait for the loser between Colombia and Chile for a third place playoff.
