AFCON Hopes dimmed as Harambee Stars fall to Comoros

Kenya vs Comoros : Harambee Stars hopes of a return to the Africa Cup of Nations were dimmed on Sunday as the Kenyan side lost to Comoros 2-1 in Moroni.

Kenya’s hopes of qualifying to the next Africa Cup of Nations faded on Sunday as the Harambee Stars lost 2-1 to their hosts Comoros Islands in the return leg of the encounter played in Moroni.

Kenya, travelled to Comoros hoping to recover from their 1-1 draw in Nairobi on Wednesday but their wasted chances ended up haunting the side led by Ghost Mulee who returned at the helm of the technical bench after over a decade.

With Four matches played, Kenya has managed only three points from three draws and are third placed on the Group G table standings behind leaders Comoros (8 Points) and Egypt who have 5 points with less matches played.

In Comoros, Kenya found themselves trailing courtesy of El Fardou Ben’s opener. Cliff Nyakeya handed the visiting side some relief with a lever as the two sides headed for a break tied at 1-1.

It was Faiz Mattoir’s winning goal four minutes into the second half that seems to have sealed Kenya’s hopes of a return to the Cup of Nations as the Islanders held on to win the match 2-1.

Kenya will now need maximum six points from the remaining two matches against Egypt and Togo and hope Comoros lose their remaining matches to stand a mathematical chance of qualification.
