World and Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Korir looked to have clinched a berth in the semifinal with a first place finish in heat six, clocking a time of 46.20 seconds, only to be disqualified for a lane infringement at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham,England

World and Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Korir looked to have clinched a berth in the semifinal with a first place finish in heat six, clocking a time of 46.20 seconds, only to be disqualified for a lane infringement at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham,England. This is his second disqualification at a major 400m event, having being disqualified at last year's Olympic Games in Tokyo. 

Boniface Mweresa secured a berth in the 400m semifinals.

Mweresa finished first in a time of 45.91 seconds, finishing ahead of Nigeria’s Samson Nathaniel who clocked 46.31 seconds with Grenada’s Michael Francois securing the third qualification slot in a personal best time of 46.35 seconds.

A third Kenyan, William Raiyan, missed out entirely on semifinal qualification after finishing fifth in heat 7 in a time of 47.08 seconds
