Reining National Rally Champion Carl Flash Tundo is seeking to win the coveted Safari Rally three times in a row during the 61st edition of the event which takes place at the Kajiado, Isinya, Konza, Andy’s Corner, Orien and Olkejuado regions over the weekend.

'Flash’ as he is commonly referred to retained his Safari Rally title last after beating Ian Duncan with a 15-second gap .He  was driving Mitsubishi EVO9 navigated by Tim Jessop and recorded a time of 2:50:05 in the rally that concluded at the KICC.

Regarded as the Toughest Rally the, 2011 series resulted in star-studded drivers bowing out of the race long before the end of was even near, "Last year was one great rally, the fact that I won it by such a small margin makes the race more interesting. The car is in good shape as we look forward to having a clean rally where we shall do our best.” said the Menengai Oil sponsored speedster.

“Last year unfortunately were not able to pop champagne as the country was mourning the death of the then Security Minister George Saitoti through an horrific air crash.” He added.

Tundo said the Rally will be monitored by many especially at a time the government is trying to restore Kenya’s status at the World Rally Championships series.

“The rally was part of the World Rally Championship calendar for many years until it was excluded in 2003 due to lack of funding and organisation. The Kenyan government is trying to get the rally’s World Rally Championships (WRC) status restored.”

Since 2003 the event has been part of the African Rally Championship organised by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). It is currently known as the KCB Safari Rally after its sponsor, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).
