69 drivers have confirmed participation in the 61st edition of the Kenya Commercial Bank Safari Rally that will be held between July 5th and 7th after entries for the event closed on Friday.

The event that will take place between Nairobi and Kajiado will act as the fifth round of the FIA African Rally Championship and it will also count towards the fifth round of the 2013 Kenya National Rally Championship.

Speaking at the launch of the event which took place at the KICC, Chairman of the Kenya Motor Sports Federation Roy Mackenzie stated that the rally was one of the biggest events in the Kenya Rally scene, “we expect to see top notch rallying during the Safari Rally this being one of the biggest events in our calender. The route put together is quite challenging and if you consider the recent rains the drivers have to be at their best.”

KNRC and Safari Rally Champion, Carl Tundo will be looking to emulate legendary Shekhar Mehta’s five victories the highest ever recorded by any driver. Compared to Mehtar who had his victories’ contribute to the FIA World Rally Championships, Tundo’s wins came in the current FIA African Rally Championship status.

KCB increased its sponsorship towards rallying from 36 Million in the year 2012 to 39.6 Million in the KNRC 2013 calender and so far three legs of the series remain. The remaining legs will be hosted in Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa.
