Kakamega High school’s supremacy in rugby again came to the fore after they successfully defended the Kenya Secondary School Games (KSSSA) Rugby title by beating St. Mary’s Yala 18-3 in the final at Mangu schools on Saturday.

The explosive final was played at the now familiar muddy pitch which has been in use since the championships commenced on Tuesday. Both teams were 2009 finalists and won all their preliminary matches hence final was  expected to be a cracker by all means.

Nelson Sangara  who has been instrumental for the Nzoia based school opened the account mid-way through the first half  with a well-executed run. Edgar Khafumi was  successful in the try to give Kakamega a 7-0 lead.

The defending champions extended the lead towards the end of the half with Billy Isabwa converting two penalties in a space of three minutes after their opponent’s committed punishable mistakes. Kakamega led 14-0 at the break.

Felix Juma, the most valuable player for Yala, gave his side a lifeline with a penalty in the second half but Kakamega’s  lead was extended again by a Daniel Abuonji try to give the champions a18-3 victory.

St. Mary’s was the first team to book a spot in the finals after they beat Kangaru from Northern 22-5 while Kakamega had an easy outing after they crashed Nakuru Day 29-0.

Kakamega has now won the tournament a record 6 times since the competition began in 1981. They won the tournament in 2000,2002,2009,2011 and 2012 and now 2013 while St. Mary’s Yala has won it only once in the year 2003 and have finished as runners up four  times throughout the period.
