Ruth Chebet was in sizzling form to win the 5000 M race in the ongoing term one Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association school on Thursday morning at the Kasarani stadium. The 17 year old student from Riruta Central School comes from a family of 9 children most of whom are house hold names in the Kenya athletics scenes.

She clocked 16.10 to win the race with Jackline Chebwogen of Kabarak school from Nakuru coming a distant second in  time of 16.30.9. Ester Kakuri of Shinyore in Nakuru completed the podium in a time of 16.45. The three will therefore qualify to represent the country in the August, East Africa secondary school games to be held in Kampala, Uganda.

Chebet after the race said she didn’t expect very much competition since she has been training very hard for the games.

“I had a comfortable race having trained very hard coming to this day. I am happy and would like to emulate the success of some of my family members like the recently crowned Paris marathon champion Peter Some.” she said.

The Brookside sponsored athletics events were initially supposed to take place at the Thika Municipal stadium but were moved to Kasarani since the stadium was waterlogged therefore could not be used. They will continue on Friday.
