Western Stima cage AFC Leopards in the western derby

The western derby of Western Stima and AFC Leopards lived to its expectations pulling a mammoth crowd with tension and anxiety feeling the atmosphere in Kakamega town and at the Bukhungu stadium prior to the match on Sunday afternoon.

Home team Western Stima brought to a halt the winning form of AFC Leopards who had before their encounter collected maximum points in their previous two matches against Ulinzi Stars and Karuturi Sports respectively.

Stima striker Francis Chinjili almost opened the scores as early as the tenth minute but his thunderous effort was denied by the cross bar. Two minutes later, the wave changed direction when Itubu Imbem and Abraham Cokie combined well in midfield but the final ball from Cokie was easily collected by Stima keeper David Juma.

The lone goal of the match was scored in the 23rd minute from a free kick at the edge of the box taken by Kevin Amwayi. The powerful curl from Amwayi deflected off an AFC Leopards’ defender Douglas Okumu to dislodge an aerial Barnabas Tiema for the all important goal.

Matano decided to start Demonde Selenga on the bench but brought him in the second half for Evans Wandera as AFC Leopards kept charging forward in search of the equalizer towards the final minutes of the match.Demonde and Itubu paired well upfront constantly keeping the Stima defense under pressure but unfortunate for AFC Leopards all their efforts remained saved by keeper David Juma who had a fabulous day in office, it was a bad outing for AFC Leopards and they dropped three points to the disappointment of  the legion of western fans.
