Thika United, AFC Leopards match abandoned

AFC Leopards risk a heavy penalty after her fans disrupted the Kenya Premier League match against Thika United at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday in the 87th minute by throwing objects aimed at the players and invading the pitch.

Thika United, who were the host team, had taken the lead in the 13th minute via Captain Dennis Odhiambo who fired in a superb free kick.

The visitors gave their all but the well-oiled Thika United defense did not crack much to the dismay of a section of fans who started misbehaving.

AFC Leopards Secretary General and Former Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa was also not spared as fans shouted “Aladwa must go” straight at his face as at the VIP dias.

The match commissioners’ effort to plead with Thika United players to return to the pitch fell on deaf year as the Brookside sponsored side did not want to take any risk. The invasion of the pitch by a section of AFC leopards fans was the final straw that made the match commissioners call off the match.

Poor results by AFC leopards led to the firing of James Nandwa who was replaced by Abdallah Juma.

Rumors this week suggested Briton Trevor Morgan had been appointed to take over the club as head coach but the presence of former Raja Casablanca coach Khalid Arioua, who is also interested in the job, at Nyayo Stadium could mean the deal is far from being sealed.
