Prime minister Raila Odinga on Thursday morning boosted the Gor Mahia team kitty with 500,000 shillings ahead of their trip to Maputo for the CAF confederations Cup tie against Mozambique’s Ferroviaro on Saturday.
At the same time Raila promised the team one million shillings if they win the first leg match in Mozambique.
‘I am a diehard soccer fan, I support Gor and AFC leopards, two historically rich clubs with enormous following in Kenya .I urge other clubs to emulate what the two clubs have done and soon we will see more fans in the stadiums.Remember you are going out with a national name.Do your best when you
are out there because it is the national flag you are carrying.” he said
While receiving the cash token, Captain Jerim Onyango appreciated the premier’s gesture and he says it will greatly boost the team’s morale.
“The gesture by the prime minister is so encouraging, we as players are motivated to win, and we promise our fans that we will give our best. This is a great motivator to our work rate. Thank you to the premier and to all those who have come on board to support our continental title search.” said the captain.
Following the recent heavy recruitment by the team, Odinga is optimistic the club will stage a better performance this season as compared to the recent immediate past. He particularly referred to the humiliating 5-0 defeat at home to APR in their last continental campaign saying this must be a thing of the past as the team should work towards regaining her yester year’s glory.
“The glory days of the past are not far away and am confident the team will do well this time round. We will give you all the needed support.”
The Prime Minister was speaking at his office in Nairobi when he hosted the Gor Mahia playing unit, technical bench and the management.
Gor Mahia departs on Friday for Mozambique where they will play in their first leg of the CAF champions League match against Ferroviaro.
